An off-grid worksheet is useful when it keeps unlike decisions separate. Water is measured in gallons, energy in watt-hours, sanitation in an approved containment and disposal duration, and current site conditions in documented checks. Combining them in one dashboard can expose a mismatch, but it cannot convert one unit into another or declare the stay safe.

Use this planner only after reading Off-Grid Living Basics, defining the 24-hour or 72-hour trial, and completing the site rules and seasonal checklist.

Private in-browser worksheet

Short-term off-grid dependency planner

Enter a trial duration and quantities you have already verified through the specialist plans. The worksheet exposes arithmetic gaps; it does not decide whether a site, water source, electrical system, sanitation method, shelter, or weather window is safe.

Checks completed for this exact place and date

Planning math only. The one-gallon default is the federal emergency-storage planning baseline, not an individualized prescription and not proof that any source is potable. Replace it only with a documented household plan. Use current site authorities, weather services, fire restrictions, product instructions, clinicians, and qualified electrical, sanitation, water, and accessibility professionals.

An off-grid day works on paper only when water, energy, and waste are counted as connected limits.

What the worksheet calculates

The planner performs four bounded comparisons:

  1. Entered water need: people × days × the gallons-per-person-per-day value you enter.
  2. Water margin: verified safe-water inventory minus the entered need.
  3. Entered energy need: measured daily watt-hours × days.
  4. Energy margin: starting usable watt-hours plus a conservative total recharge input minus entered demand.

It also compares the number of approved sanitation-capacity days you enter with the trial duration and counts four documented site checks. No data leaves the browser or remains after the page is reset or closed.

The default water rate is one gallon per person per day because federal emergency-kit materials use that as a three-day drinking-and-sanitation storage baseline. It is not an individualized hydration prescription, a hot-weather allowance, an animal allowance, or proof that any source or container is safe. The Emergency Water Storage calculator owns the household baseline and additional user-entered planning amount.

Prepare the water input

Do not enter the volume of every stream, tank, pond, well, faucet, or container visible at the site. Enter only water already documented as part of the safe supply under the responsible authority and the Emergency Water Storage hub.

Record outside this tool:

  • source and authority status;
  • sealed or filled date and container identity;
  • drinking, cooking, medication, infant, animal, and hygiene allocation;
  • protected exit reserve;
  • dispensing and spill control;
  • storage temperature and physical access;
  • fallback source and the trigger for using it.

If water treatment is proposed, use Emergency Water Filtration, Purification, and Treatment Explained. A positive volume cannot establish that a filter, boil, chemical, UV, carbon, reverse-osmosis, or distillation process addresses the identified contaminant. Unknown water stays outside the inventory.

Prepare the energy input

Use measured or documented loads from the backup-power load worksheet. Sum each intended load’s realistic daily watt-hours. Keep output power, startup surge, waveform, voltage, connector, grounding, cord, weather, and temperature limits in the equipment record; this planner does not evaluate them.

For starting usable energy, use the conservative amount available under the exact equipment instructions and current condition. Do not automatically enter the advertised battery capacity. Reserve, conversion losses, temperature, aging, inverter demand, shutdown behavior, and manufacturer limits affect what can be used.

For recharge, enter a conservative total over the entire trial, not panel nameplate watts multiplied by daylight. Use measured results from the actual compatible system and a weather-aware range from Portable Solar Panels for Outages. Enter zero when recharge is uncertain. A plan that only works after optimistic recharge is not robust.

Protect communication, safe lighting, medical equipment, medication support, and exit energy separately. A positive overall margin is not permission to consume that reserve on convenience loads.

Prepare the sanitation-duration input

“Sanitation capacity” means the complete period for which the exact approved toilet, hand-hygiene, containment, sealed storage, and disposal route can function for this group at this location. It is not the number of empty bags or the advertised size of a portable toilet.

Use the Emergency Sanitation hub and toilet continuity guide. Verify current rules with the site operator and health, wastewater, solid-waste, or land authority. Include:

  • human waste and toilet supplies;
  • handwashing water, soap, drying, and clean/dirty separation;
  • graywater and dishwater;
  • food waste and wildlife-safe storage;
  • diapers, hygiene products, sharps, medicines, and pet waste;
  • ordinary trash, batteries, fuel containers, ash, and hazardous material;
  • final transport or disposal and the point at which the group leaves.

Enter zero days when any link is unresolved. Do not use the planner to justify burying, dumping, burning, dispersing, or storing waste.

Complete all four current checks

The checkboxes are documentation prompts, not legal or safety certifications.

Permission, occupancy, access, and stay rules

Confirm the exact parcel, dates, group, vehicles, animals, equipment, activity, permit, fee, reservation, access route, and stay limit. A general statement that dispersed camping is allowed somewhere in a district is not site approval.

Fire restrictions and fuel-device rules

Confirm the current rule for each flame, stove, charcoal device, generator, heater, fuel container, spark-producing tool, and firewood action. Restrictions can change after planning. Keep a no-flame fallback.

Forecast, safe shelter, and exit triggers

Use the site forecast and multiple warning paths. Identify the substantial building or hard-topped vehicle used for lightning where applicable; a tent or open shelter is not safe lightning protection. Record heat, cold, smoke, flood, wind, fire, snow, ice, and road triggers.

Potable water, toilets, wastewater, and trash

Confirm availability and rules through the current site and responsible health, water, wastewater, or waste authority. An old amenity list cannot verify that a tap, toilet, dumpster, or dump station is operating.

Read a negative margin correctly

A water result of “short 3 gallons” means the entered inventory is three gallons below the entered arithmetic plan. It does not prescribe how to obtain the difference. The answer may be a shorter trial, fewer participants, more approved stored water, a different permitted site, or postponement. It is not permission to use an uncertain source or restrict drinking.

An energy result of “short 600 Wh” means entered demand exceeds starting usable energy plus entered recharge. Reduce or reschedule approved noncritical loads, shorten the trial, use a properly designed alternate system, or choose a serviced location. Do not defeat protection, backfeed wiring, overload a source, move a generator indoors, or drain a medical or exit reserve.

A sanitation shortfall means the current approved system ends before the trial. Shorten or relocate. Do not add capacity by improvising an unapproved disposal method.

An unchecked site item means the answer is unknown. Unknown is not a soft yes.

Read a positive result conservatively

“Entered paper plan covers the trial” means only that:

  • entered water inventory is at least the entered arithmetic need;
  • entered starting energy and recharge are at least entered energy demand;
  • entered sanitation duration is at least the trial duration;
  • all four documentation boxes were checked.

It does not evaluate water potability, container integrity, individual needs, appliance compatibility, battery health, surge, solar weather, generator placement, toilet design, waste legality, shelter, fire danger, forecast accuracy, medical support, animal welfare, access, or exit. Conditions can invalidate the plan immediately after calculation.

Use daily checkpoints instead of one final number

For a multi-day trial, record actual values at a fixed time each morning and evening:

Checkpoint Safe water remaining Usable energy remaining Recharge since last check Sanitation/waste status Weather/rules Exit reserve
Day 1 morning measured measured or documented measured stable / concern current check protected
Day 1 evening measured measured or documented measured stable / concern current check protected
Later checks repeat repeat repeat repeat repeat repeat

Recalculate from the remaining duration rather than defending the original estimate. Preserve a daylight departure window. Three days can create accumulating waste, fatigue, moisture, caregiver load, food risk, and equipment degradation that the opening numbers do not show.

Keep immediate stop rules outside the calculator

Stop, restore normal service, relocate, or call the responsible authority for an official instruction, alarm, fire, carbon monoxide, fuel leak, damaged electrical equipment, unsafe temperature, severe weather, illness, injury, unsafe water, sanitation failure, lost communication, medical or animal-support trigger, inaccessible route, or compromised exit. Never wait for the worksheet margin to reach zero.

The temporary off-grid power guide owns electrical and combustion limits. The medical-device power plan owns clinical continuity. The pet emergency hub owns animal medication, shelter, heat, cold, and evacuation needs.
