2. Stop paying for nothing

4. Measure, do not guess

A realistic first month
Efficiency stalls when it is framed as one big project. Spread across four weeks, it becomes a set of small, finishable tasks:
- Week 1 — See it. Pull a year of bills and run the DIY audit walk-through. Write down every finding without fixing anything yet.

Efficiency is not the whole plan
One caution before the boundaries below. Efficiency lowers what you consume and lengthens what your backup can supply, but it does not create energy or guarantee safety in a long emergency. A well-sealed, low-load home still needs a real backup power plan, safe non-electric heat, stored water, and — when an outage outlasts your reserves — a way to relocate to a warming or cooling center. Where efficiency stops and safety begins
Efficiency work touches systems that carry real risk. Keep these boundaries:
- Combustion appliances. Tightening a home changes how naturally it ventilates. After significant air sealing, have a trained technician verify that furnaces, water heaters, and other fuel-burning appliances still vent correctly. Never chase efficiency at the cost of backdrafting exhaust into living space.
- Electrical work. Efficiency does not mean overloading circuits with power strips or ignoring warning signs. If you see any signs of an overloaded electrical circuit, stop and address the electrical issue first.
- Insulation hazards. Older homes may contain asbestos or knob-and-tube wiring that makes DIY insulation unsafe. When in doubt, get a professional assessment before adding material.
