A severe storm is rarely one hazard. The same system can bring damaging wind, frequent lightning, hail, and flash flooding within an hour, and each one creates a different household problem: the power fails, a tree comes down, water gets in, roads flood, and the people inside have to decide, quickly, whether staying put is still the safe choice.

Good preparation is mostly done before the sky darkens. It protects people first, then the building, power, water, communication, and a safe recovery — and it accepts one hard limit up front: a home is only a shelter while it can keep you safe. When it cannot, leaving early beats waiting.

Know the difference between a watch and a warning

This is the single distinction that changes what you do, so get it right before a storm, not during one.

  • A watch means conditions are favorable for severe weather. It is your window to prepare: charge devices, bring in loose objects, review where you would shelter, and stay near a reliable source of alerts.
  • A warning means severe weather is happening or imminent in your area. Act now. Move to your safe location and stay there until the warning is lifted.

The National Weather Service issues these for severe thunderstorms, tornadoes, and flash floods separately, and a single storm can trigger more than one at once. Treat the most urgent one as your instruction. Before the storm: the work that pays off

Almost everything useful happens here, on a calm day, with time to think.

Protect the people and the plan. Decide in advance where the household shelters from wind — an interior room on the lowest level, away from windows — and make sure everyone, including children and anyone with a mobility limit, knows it. Protect the building. Wind and water find the weak points first. Protect power and comfort. A severe storm and a multi-hour outage usually arrive together. If you rent or live in an apartment

During the storm: fewer decisions, made calmly

Once a warning is active, the goal is to have almost nothing left to decide.

  • Get to your safe location and stay off the phone for anything but emergencies. Interior room, lowest level, away from windows and exterior doors.
  • Treat lightning seriously. The CDC’s guidance is blunt: when thunder roars, go indoors, and stay inside for 30 minutes after the last thunder. Indoors, stay off corded electronics and away from plumbing during the worst of it.

  • Stay away from floodwater. It hides downed lines, sharp debris, and depth you cannot judge. Do not drive through it; do not walk through it to check on something.
  • Do not go outside to inspect damage until the storm has fully passed and you know there are no downed lines nearby.

Two hazards worth naming on their own

Wind and lightning get the attention, but two others cause a disproportionate share of storm damage and deaths.

Hail is a property hazard more than a personal one, as long as you are indoors. If a storm is producing hail, stay away from windows and skylights, and move a vehicle under cover if you can do it safely before the storm arrives — not during it. Never go outside to move a car or cover a window once hail has started.

Flash flooding is the quiet killer. It develops fast, often after the heaviest rain has moved on, and it does not take much water to sweep away a person or a vehicle. The rule is simple and non-negotiable: turn around, don’t drown. Do not drive or walk into water of unknown depth, and treat a flooded road as closed even if it looks shallow. After the storm: recover without creating a second emergency

The hours after a storm cause their own injuries, mostly from moving too fast.

  • Assume every downed line is live and keep everyone well back. Report it to the utility; do not touch anything in contact with it.
