Small homes do not need a giant preparedness room. They need a truthful answer to a smaller question: can the household place the next useful supplies in a location that can actually be reached and maintained? A cabinet, low closet shelf, utility nook, or under-bed location can be useful when it has a clear job. It becomes a problem when it is treated as proof that a pile of heavy, fragile, or inaccessible supplies is safe.
This planner compares the flat footprint of two household modules with one entered storage surface. It also shows the CDC’s one-gallon-per-person-per-day emergency-water baseline for the household and time period you enter. It does not calculate a complete reserve, approve a shelf, decide a safe carrying weight, or establish that a home is safe to stay in. Use it to expose a question worth checking in the real room, not to turn a rectangle into a certificate.

Footprint arithmetic does not establish safe stacking, shelf or floor load, lifting, fire clearance, lease approval, accessibility, container suitability, food safety, or whether a home remains safe to occupy.
Start with one storage surface, not the whole home
Choose one ordinary location and measure only the flat surface you can use without moving furniture, blocking a door, or reaching above the ability of the person who will retrieve the supplies. A low kitchen cabinet, reachable closet shelf, or sturdy floor-level tote location may be more useful than a deep storage area that disappears behind seasonal items.
The planner treats every entered container or bin as a flat rectangle. It adds the rectangles and compares them with the entered width and depth of the surface:
usable width x usable depth = entered storage surface
container count x container width x container depth = entered module footprint
That is deliberately incomplete. Real containers have handles, lids, uneven edges, labels, clearances, and a need to be lifted out. The calculation does not model stacking, doors, drawers, water weight, shelf brackets, wall attachment, leak paths, fire rules, or a route through a crowded room. A small positive number is a prompt to check the location in person, not permission to fill every inch.
For the first step, enter a conservative usable surface rather than the outside dimensions of furniture. If a cabinet door needs room to swing, if the shelf has a center support, or if an item needs a hand around it, subtract that space before entering a number. A plan that appears to fit only when every gap is ignored has not really found a home.
Keep water arithmetic separate from storage approval
The water figure in the tool follows the familiar CDC emergency-storage baseline: at least one gallon per person per day, with additional needs depending on heat, health, infant feeding, activity, and animals. The planner does not guess those additional needs. It only makes the visible baseline easy to compare with the physical space you are considering.
Water is unusually easy to underestimate because its volume looks modest until it is placed on a shelf, carried up stairs, or poured from a container. One gallon of water weighs about 8.34 pounds before the container, lid, shelf, cart, or other equipment is considered. Do not translate that fact into a safe lifting, shelf, or floor limit. Those limits depend on the actual person, surface, property, container, route, and building.

Build modules by function
Use the planner for modules that already have a defined job. Do not enter a random pile of purchases just because the containers have similar dimensions. The first useful modules are usually small and familiar:

Food that cannot be reached, opened, prepared, rotated, or kept dry is not made practical by a larger storage calculation.
Check the actual route before relying on a location
The final checkbox in the tool is intentionally not automatic. Stand in the real space and look at the location with ordinary household conditions in place. Can the intended person open the door fully? Is the walkway still clear in low light? Is a detector, panel, shutoff, outlet, building corridor, or life-safety device left accessible? Would a small leak reach electrical equipment, documents, food, medication, or a lower neighbor? Can the person who may need the item actually see, reach, open, and control it?
Do not turn this into a forced retrieval test. Stop when it would require a person to climb, lift beyond their own plan, enter a shared or restricted space, alter building equipment, or move through an unsafe route. The honest answer may be that the current home needs a smaller module, another location, help from a property owner, or an earlier departure plan.

Use a negative result as useful information
When the entered modules exceed the entered surface, do not solve the problem by stacking containers higher, moving heavy water above shoulder height, or placing a tote in an exit route. The result is a design question, not a reason to force more into the same space.
Possible next actions are modest:
- Reduce the module to the first three days and add depth only after a safe location is confirmed.
- Divide one large module into smaller containers only when the household can inspect, move, and dispense them appropriately.
- Move a low-risk rotation layer to another approved, reachable location.
- Replace a food plan that needs excess water, heat, or equipment with meals the household can use in the expected scenario.
- Keep the departure layer separate from the stay-at-home reserve so neither becomes an obstacle.

Review after a household or home change
Re-run one surface after a move, a new roommate, caregiver change, new child or pet, mobility change, leak, renovation, seasonal shift, or after any event that made a module difficult to find. Review labels and container instructions at the same time. The planner works best as a five-minute check alongside an ordinary home routine, not as a one-time optimization project.
Print only the result that is useful for a shared household check. Keep it in a controlled place if the location clue could reveal more than the household would want a visitor to know. The aim is a home where the next practical item has a place, a purpose, and a reachable route.
